Yeah I too tried ATI a few years ago, didn't like it at all.
Mainly i find ATI/AMD's driver system and control panel way inferior compared to Nvidia's
With Nvidia I have nice game/.exe profiles that execture my preset settings without a hitch.
When i had the ATI card and drivers i could do something similar but i had to create a bloody special shortcut for each program to actually launch the games with those presets.

BTW: I'm now running NVidia Geforce 8800GTX. (Don't ask. It was supposed to be dead. Now it runs like a dream... )
